If only they carried on like this for a little longer

Atrocity is such a mixed bag of a band. They can be capable of such greatness, yet can go completely the opposite way and tread the world of one listen wonders.
Todessehnsucht, along with their much later Atlantis album, is one of those moments of greatness.

For a 1992 death metal album it sounds pretty original, polished and refreshing. It's clearly a death metal album, but steers clear of the cliched 90's death metal album sound and structure.

The moment you hear the first 5 minutes you know it's different. It starts with a dark orchestral piece which comes across as quite proffessional sounding instead of sounding like it was done on a cheap casio. This then blends into a technical bass led metal rhythm, with awesome complicated drumming. From then on you're treated to a metal album which has quite a few twists and turns. The drumming covers black metal speed blasts beats, technical midpaced rhythms and some cool double bass drumming. Theres a nice amount of crunchy guitaring, harmonies, and you're given a fantastic display of dark fast duel thrash guitaring for the intro of the last track Archangel. The vocals are different too. They're agressive and death metal like but not overly extreme and varies it's tone.

One of the best twists is that halfway through the album, you're treated to another instrumental intro which is actualy the music 'siegfrieds funeral march to the ring' (used in the 1981 movie Excalibur) with a narration and wind sound over the top of it. This builds up louder and louder and jumps straight into the track 'when the sky turns red' which is a great piece of dark technical death metal. The guitaring is played along side the orchestral music at the start of this track.

All in all, it's a great album, and a sign of what they could be capable of. Sadly, this didn't turn out till Atlantis.
