This is the fourth album by influential grindcore band,
Pig Destroyer. When I first heard about this album, I was sceptical. For one, the album had only 14 songs, as opposed to their usual twenty-ish. The songs were also longer in comparison to their previous albums. Then I listened to the album front to back and realized this is another one of PxDx's masterpieces.
Pig Destroyer definitely perfected their sound with this album. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of
Prowler in the Yard and
Terrifyer and I still think PITY is their best album. Just everything fits in perfectly for this album. THe guitars are fast and technical, the vocals are almost inhuman, the drums are amazing as always and their samples and noise brought by new member
Blake Harrison are in taste and adds a feel the the songs. The best thing about this album's sound, though, is the fact that it's not just fast and heavy, it's dynamic. The guitar has hooks and a groove but is still grindcore at its core. The vocals are catchy but still heavy and growling. It's grindcore, but it's more. The only way i can describe it is dynamic.
The one thing I have a problem with is that to me,
Pig Destroyer is synonymous to amazing lyrics. This album's lyrics were lacking. In PITY and
Terrifyer the lyrics were really amazing and used metaphors and similes and sarcasm and irony to make these amazing short poems of black humor, sorrow and social content. Some of the songs just told stories with some metaphors and similes thrown in. Songs like
Heathen's
Temple and Waist Deep in
Ash and Lesser Animal did seem like the old PxDx. Other songs like
Girl in a
Slayer Jacket and The Machete Twins, though had amazing sound, lacked something in the lyrics.
All in all, this is an amazing album. Personally, my favorite song is Waist Deep in
Ash. I'd recommend this album to anyone. 19/20.
Pure amazing grindcore!
