Almost 7.5 years after the release of the album
Misadventures in 2016 which was a first step into a more mainstream sound,
Pierce the
Veil released their latest effort,
The Jaws of Life, in February last year. When the official announcement was made and the first song, Pass the
Nirvana, was made public I had high hopes for another banger album by the SD mexicore band which has shrinked into a trio after drummer Mike Fuentes has left the group in 2017 in the wake of sexual misconduct allegation made against him.
With Paul Meany, who was in charge on playing drums and producing the record, the hype was officially real. When pre-orders started, I ordered some copies for me and my friends. But the release of the subsequent singles made me think that something feels off. Instead of a more pop punky post hardcore, the bands' sounds where washed into an unindefineable mess. It sounded mushy, like the record was thrown into a washing mashine and been forgotten there for too long. Don't get me wrong. The album has really good songs on it's hand like "Death of an
Executioner" (very solid listen), "Flawless
Execution" and the before mentioned "Pass the
Nirvana". One of the biggest problems of
The Jaws of Life is that the actually good songs are all on the first half of the record, while the latter half is simply forgetable. There is nothing positive worth to be mentioned because there is nothing positive to be mentioned.
I am all in, if a band want to progress their sound. It is totally okay for me, I am fine with that. But this mess was worse than I have ever thought. Not only,
Pierce The Veil did abandon their original sound which I became a fan but it felt like a big slap in the face to all of those who where eagerly waiting for the new album to come out. It feels like I was spit in the face. If this is the result of almost eight years waiting, I won't be waiting for a new record of this band for a next time. If you look in a dictionary for the meaning of disappointment, this album would be the definition. There will be people out there, who may love this album, but there also will be fans who will hate it. I am definitively one of those who won't listen to the whole album again except for the better songs.
