Weakling meets Isis

Világvége is an interesting album, taking the heavier parts of Panopticon and mixing it with the density and desolate atmosphere of Dead As Dreams, Világvége is an exciting breath of fresh air. Any band that challenges the boundaries of Metal to create something new in this day and age certainly get my respect and Rorcal surely have garnered mine, and much more.

Világvége is a fucking brutal album, the sound is incredibly abrasive and vile and the Black Metal tendencies only amplify this. The cold atmosphere is utterly suffocating, making it stand out in the sea of Atmospheric Sludge bands. Unlike other bands within the genre, there's no calm interludes or Post Rock sections, this is full on metal with nothing else thrown into the fray.

The Black Metal influences are pretty brutal and desolate but at times they can be quite mellow and atmospheric yet still undeniably angry. Track VI is the blackest track on the album starting with a cool Weakling inspired riff that moves into some ferocious Melodic Black Metal. The vocals are vicious and aggressive, complimenting the music nicely. They may not be the most unique sounding but by god they're angry.

The whole album is just incredibly aggressive and Rorcal do not let up for the entire playing time. For the entire 43 minutes Rorcal pummels the listener over the head with ferocious blackened sludge, there's no holding up, no mellow parts to break the album apart, just full on brutality all the way through.

The juxtaposition between heavy as fuck Sludge and vile Black Metal really helps to make this album what it is. It's ridiculously brutal due to these two aspects but the atmosphere is also phenomenal as well, not all brutal music has to be hollow and sterile as Rorcal have shown that it can at times possess a stark beauty. Világvége is like Darth Vader, originally he appears evil and cold but at the end there's a sense of warmth about him. That's what I get with Világvége, it's evil, vile and hateful on the outside but there's a sense of atmospheric sensibility and softness to the music that gives it a unique flair. Although some albums are just evil to the bone, Világvége is different as the evilness is mixed with some warm atmospherics. It's a pleasant contrast and one that I greatly appreciate.

Overall I'd highly recommend Világvége, it's got a great heavy as hell sludge feel mixed with some dense and claustrophobic Black Metal. It's a really original album and one of the most exciting and innovating I've heard in the new decade. It's definitely not an album to be missed out with as Rorcal challenge genre conventions and mix in some interesting elements into the fray. Brutally atmospheric is the best way to describe Világvége and if that sounds interesting to you then pick this up immediately. Világvége is in a league of its own in terms of brutality, not for the feint of heart or the weak of hearing.
